On the 21st of December Dan burst the "bursa" sack in his knee. This is a pocket of water behind your knee cap. Each day his knee progressively got more and more swollen. But even with an ace bandage and I am sure a large amount of pain - he went walking in Winterhaven - played Christmas games and did things for everyone else.
Finally on the 26th at 4:30 a.m. Dan woke me up and said you need to take me to the hospital. I couldn't believe my husband was asking to go to the hospital - he is the fix yourself man - then I looked down at his leg and saw this massive swollen knee, calf and ankle. Thanks to Neil and Eve for waking up and taking the kids! We went to the ER and they ran tests, did an ultrasound and xray. No one was quite sure what had happened so they admitted Dan tot he hospital and started IV antibiotics. I drove down to Green Valley with the kids to spend the night at my parents - someone had to feed the kids with Dan in the hospital!
They drained over 60cc from his knee at the hospital and then sent him home. We were scheduled a follow up with a knee surgeon. We went on New Year's Eve and they took out 15 more cc's. The knee was still looking miserable. We went back on Jan 4 and they schedule surgery for the 5th. The opened Dan's knee from the bottom of his knee cap to the top of his knee cap and "pressure washed" his knee out. Then inserted a tube in the side of his knee for continued drainage. It is already looking and feeling much better. As usual Dan was more worried about others than he was about himself. He even tried to fix Neil and Eve's water heater only 30 minutes after leaving the surgery center.
Dan is the man!!! I just wish he would let us take care of him sometimes!!
